“Sanctuary” & “Flight”
“Sanctuary,” an Exhibit of Works by The Drawing Studio Teaching Artists in Conjunction with “Flight,” a collection of prints by 20th Century Masters.
Everyone needs a place of refuge at some time. Fifty years ago, Varian Fry’s commissioned Flight collection, 12 prints by 20th Century masters, including Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, and Robert Motherwell, represented interpretations of wartime struggle of those who flee their homes in search of safety and the hope of a new life. Today, TDS Teaching Artists, through their two- and three-dimensional works, represent a place of refuge from flight. “Sanctuary” is a contemporary and local interpretation of what that hope at the end of flight—be it from war or from a life of oppression and terror and toward a life of opportunity and freedom—looks like.
“Flight: Mid-century Masters Interpret the Escape for Survival” is a traveling exhibit being shown in conjunction with the 75th Anniversary year of its sponsor, The International Rescue Committee, to draw attention to the work it does with refugees in relief, rehabilitation, protection, post-conflict development, and resettlement services for refugees and others uprooted or affected by persecution and violent conflict all over the globe. The works in “Sanctuary” offer a counter-image, a sacred place of refuge from strife where one can center oneself.
In this pairing of exhibits, the viewer enters into a visual conversation between images of war’s terrors and individuals’ hope, determination, and search for sustenance, emerging into a different space, another perspective. In the shared act of creating and experiencing, thus, both artist and viewer can be empowered to heal from trauma or be transported to another place, a sanctuary.
On October 19th, a representative from the IRC will talk about the artists and their work in the “Flight” exhibit. Following will be a panel discussion by TDS Faculty, each of whom is an exhibiting artist in his or her own right. These master teaching artists will respond to the theme and/or aesthetics of “Flight” works, especially as they relate to contemporary original works in the “Sanctuary” exhibit. Attendees at the exhibit and the panel discussion will have opportunity and find inspiration to learn from each of the teaching artists who are representative of the faculty at The Drawing Studio, perhaps finding motivation to enroll in one of the many classes for all skill levels and experiences.
